I find it a good book, and especially well written. The writer really lets you feel the emotions and frustrations of Billy, who really tries to do his best and shows good intentions. But it seems as if no one really gets him. Stephen May really found the balance between a sad and funny story. It’s strange to have a laugh in between all the drama. I find that the writer has a very realistic view of life, The book gives you a great example how shitty the world can be. When Billy's mother is killed in a bungled street robbery, the now orphaned nineteen year old boy is determined to look after his six year old step-brother Oscar, despite the advice of his aunt and the reappearance on the scene of Oscar's natural father who belatedly wants to claim him. In his own way Billy, who is doing a gap year before going off to university, does his best, but is it enough, especially once Social Services become involved? The book tells the story about the life of a 19-year-old young man named Billy and his little brother, who try to live on after the death of their mother. Billy is suddenly thrown into the messy adult world and tries to find the balance between being a 19-year-old and being a responsible parent with all the problems an emotions that come with it.

And as I think about it, there are many well loved or at least appreciated books that are carried by completely unconvincing characters or totally implausible story lines.
