A very lovely, very sad look at what eternal life would really be like - and how important love is, no matter how old you are. i've never read a book by ross welford before, but i definitely want to pick up the others that he's written. Once I started reading it was difficult to stop - all the characters were amazing and so likeable (especially biffa). Alfie Monk looks like any other 11-year old boy, other than a slightly odd dress sense and teeth that are badly in need of a dentist.

Aidan was a good friend but an annoying narrator (the book alternates between Alfie and Aidan's POVs). When it happens to sweet, Disney princess–like Sophie and her friend Agatha, plain of features, sour of disposition and low of self-esteem, they are both horrified to discover that they’ve been dropped not where they expect but at Evil and at Good respectively. As long as he have his mother, cat and special edition set of Charles Dickens hardbacks by his side, he felt home. The tragedies and revelations that occur throughout the story keeps you turning till the last page and even then the ending still surprises you. The people who use the means Alve and his mother (and cat) to gain immortality are known as Neverdeads.He is not someone you would adore or sympathize with immediately as you might perhaps have done with August Pullman in Wonder. This is a story about someone who wants to stopAlfie Monk is like any other nearly teenage boy except hes 1,000 years old and can remember the last Viking invasion of England. This thrilling story of a 1,000-year-old boy who just wants to grow up normally will keep any reader on the edge of their seat till the end. Welford gives his world-weary protagonist several resourceful allies led by Roxy Minto, a young neighbor of West Indian descent with a big personality, and her naïve but game sidekick, Aidan (who, like Alve, presents as white and who shares narration duties with him).

I even liked the way each chapter switched POV for each chapter and even changed the font so you always knew an Alve chapter from an Aiden chapter. In this pack, you will find 2 x whole class lessons (an hour-long for each – or you can split them), an editable PowerPoint presentation with vocabulary links, the task sheets (with scaffolding) and the planning that we use to teach the Key Stage Two Reading Domains. Alfie has been 11 years old since the Viking invasions after having taken a ‘life-pearl’ which prevents ageing. He'd be perfectly capable of reading it himself, but I'm glad he let me read it to him - I really enjoyed this book.Alfie’s existence is awkward though; if he makes a friend they soon become suspicious of the fact that he does not grow up like them, and it is the betrayal of one former friend in particular which leads to a fire at the cottage which destroys Alfie’s home and kills his mother. This brilliant author had successfully made everything up that sounded like real history with actual geography and its own linguistic features. I mean, the concept of a 1000 year-old boy who wants to stop living forever, is not the most common plot. Thank you Ross for yet another thoughtful, compelling, moving read - that made me both laugh and cry - especially the moment in the story when the cinema in my head started playing Queen, Who Wants To Live Forever.

also can someone please explain to me why writing reviews for fav books is so much harder than regular/negative reviews? They seem to make you immune to disease and stop aging, but you can still be killed by any other normal means.Although largely set in the modern-day, Welford manages to concretise the novel’s historical undertone through his masterful use of voice and point-of-view. He’s also been living with his mom for a thousand years, and never had the real need of growing up further.
