Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a 2021 computer-animated comedy film directed by Swinton Scott (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jeff Kinney, based on his 2007 book of the same name. It is the second film adaptation of the book, following the 2010 live-action film, while serving as the first fully-animated reboot in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid film series, and the fifth installment overall. The film stars the voices of Brady Noon, Ethan William Childress, Chris Diamantopoulos, Erica Cerra, and Hunter Dillon. It is why, in another classic tale by another celebrated author, we root for Pip and revile Estella; and why, in this novel, the guy named Guy made my skin crawl and I occasionally wanted to spike Maddy’s drink with a heavy dose of melatonin supplementation. I mean after all, they're based on a series of books that are largely made up of drawings. The stories are beyond simplistic, and the laughs are just this side of fart jokes. But there's real charm and truth to their simplicity that makes them engaging for parents and kids. Fans of dog stories and the RMS Titanic, take note!
