McBride DL. Clinical guidance to tattooing and piercing among youth. Journal of Pediatric Nursing. In press. Accessed Jan. 7, 2018.

In addition to all of this, there is one more important thing to note. These experiments were performed on cadavers. This was noted in the discussion section of the original paper, and means that a lot of the arguments both for and against piercing guns cannot use this paper as evidence. The study is unable to follow through with any wound healing, jewellery sensitivities, or infections caused by each method. A piercing gun causes much more tissue damage than a needle, resulting in potentially more discomfort and swelling during healing. Age limits are likely to vary from studio to studio depending on a studio’s insurance. We would suggest asking a studio you are looking to book in with what age they are insured from for ear piercings (a reputable piercer will be happy to tell you!). Tragus piercings – I have no idea how people manage to do these piercings using a gun (I’ve seen conch piercings done with a gun as well, again, no idea how much shoving and pushing that it took to get the tissue into the gun). When using a piercing needle, the artist will mark out exactly where they’ll puncture the skin, which is usually an entry and exit point to make sure the piercing is straight. Piercing Needle Advantages Accuracy This is a diagram of the piercing gun. Notice the plastic handle. As mentioned – this would melt if you put it in an autoclave. Do your research before settling for where you’re going to get your piercing. You should go to a place that’s fully licensed to ensure you’ll get the necessary legal, medical, and financial support if anything goes wrong. Whatever you decide upon for your next piercing, always make sure you go somewhere that has a good reputation. After your piercing, make sure you follow the aftercare advice your piercer gives you to make the healing process and final outcome the best possible.

Gun Piercings – We’ve all seen high street shops offering the service, as well as countless hairdressers, nail bars and jewellers (among others). But what’s so wrong about it? How do the guns work? What is the difference between a gun piercing and a needle piercing? What are the pros and cons with each? I’m going to cover as much as I can in the blog, but do leave a comment if there’s something that needs more explanation. The needle is quite large, which can be quite daunting for some. If you’re scared or nervous around needles, consider going for the gun, if it’s a possibility and offered. Slower Process After I had my very positive experience getting my helix pierced around 12 months ago by a local piercer, who works in a tattoo and piercing parlour, I knew this was where I wanted my eldest to go. I’ll admit it’s been a long time since I had my ears pierced in Claire’s as a child and although I’ve watched a few done recently, I can’t comment on the experience fully. All I remember was the crunch of the gun, sore ears and lots of surgical spirit! Depending on where you go for your piercing, and the part of your ear that you choose, a professional with a needle or piercing gun marks a spot and creates a hole. The piercer then places an earring in the hole. Will I feel pain? We can’t tell you which option is right for you: you need to compare piercing guns vs needles based on your needs. In terms of piercing options, you can only get earlobes pierced with the piercing needle. That means if you want anything else pierced, you have to use a piercing needle. The aftercare is also an important part of making sure the piercing doesn’t get infected. Clean the piercing twice a day using a clean cotton bud and a sterile saline or antibacterial solution, and remove any dried blood or discharge with warm water. Don’t twist it though because this can irritate the piercing.

Piercing guns use blunt force to tear a hole in the tissue with the end of the jewellery. This causes excessive swelling which the jewellery cannot allow for, vastly increasing the risk of embedding. I’m not for one minute saying that EVERY gun piercing will cause problems, or that EVERY needle piercing will heal without incident. Needle piercings can be problematic and swell, just like gun piercings, but it’s a much less common occurrence. And the damage done (if any) is much more rarely permanent/extensive. Proper aftercare is required with any piercing; failure to follow it can easily result in a poorly piercing, whether done with a gun or needle. The main problem with gun piercings is the jewellery used being sub-standard. I see many more gun piercings that have triggered an allergic reaction than those which are infected. Needle piercing can be SAFELY used for a much wider range of placements, and with far more jewellery options. Many people say the clamp is quite painful, with some saying the clamp is more painful than the actual piercing itself. Still, take these reports with a grain of salt: the perceived pain could potentially be attributable to anxiety. Frightening Look Look for titanium, 14-karat gold, or surgical-grade steel. What are the different types of ear piercings? Infection –Your baby may develop a piercing infection if the piercing equipment has not been sterilised, the earring clasp is too tight, or the earring is dirty. If your baby’s earlobes become red and swollen or baby has a fever, get in touch with your doctor.Often piercing guns are used in retail establishments that aren’t otherwise used to helping empower clients to make changes to their body. This brings us on to consent. A professional piercer will never pierce a client without their consent. This includes minors. Although the child’s parent will sign a consent form to agree to the procedure, the final say is with the client and if your child asks to stop at any point during the procedure, a professional piercer will stop. Bodily autonomy is crucial when it comes to piercing and your child’s full informed consent throughout the process is the only way that a professional piercer will operate. A piercing performed here at Rogue. Note the jewellery is of the correct gauge and length to allow for swelling. The jewellery itself is of the highest quality and is easy to clean and maintain. This piercing will heal perfectly and last a lifetime. First and foremost, the question we all want to know is - is this going to hurt me? This can be difficult to answer because it’s so subjective. Everyone has different pain thresholds, so something that hurts your friend might not even make you flinch. Generally, performing the piercing will hurt because you’re essentially putting a hole through your skin (it would be weird if it didn’t) so at the very least you should expect some kind of discomfort. The standard lobe piercing refers to the soft lower section of the ear. Many combinations of lobe piercings are possible for a unique look. This tends to be the least painful out of all ear piercings.
