The book is in Puffin Picture Book format, but with an accompanying wrap around dustwrapper inside which is told the story of White Horses and the journey towards this book. It has a loose cover that opens and tells the story behind the Ravilious dummy and how this new book was produced. As Marian Barbour commented, “While Shephard’s early work was bleakly linear, in the late 1930s and 1940s this gave way to the more painterly style, cool and tonal in the Euston Road tradition that derived from Sickert. The village is known for its textile heritage, and Tschudi would briefly experiment with designs for textiles when she put certain of her images onto pillow and cushion cases. Although the book was not a limited edition, the destruction of the lithographic plates during the Blitz meant that only 2000 copies were ever printed.
