Like a sponge, the charcoal absorbs most/many impurities present in the distillate, eliminating things that might detract from the taste. Milled and polished to perfection, white rice is revered for its mild and subtly sweet flavor – it’s the ultimate symbol of Japan. I was first warned against rice vodkas and as I have never tried one I was curious to give one a shot.

It’s then distilled a second time through two different processes to create both flavor and volume, before being blended and filtrated in the Suntory Liqueur Atelier at Osaka Plant. This rice vodka hails from the southernmost tropical island of Okinawa, and is meticulously crafted from a traditional Japanese Awamori spirit - indigenous and unique to the island.Produced by Japan's famed House of Suntory, renowned for whisky from Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki and more, this craft vodka is made with 100% Japanese white rice. The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers.

Marrying the stunning traditions of sake, shochu and vodka this is a spirit inspired by the brilliant purity of light that is unparalleled in smoothness, delicacy and nuance. The bright blue colour is what it’s known for, alongside the surprisingly fresh taste of oranges, both the peel and flesh. The use of bamboo charcoal for water filtration is one of the fundamentals of Japanese culture and goes back to ancient Japan where charcoal was said to “sweeten” the water for tea. It's also got some mizunara (Japanese oak) matured whisky in the mix, which comes through as a complex spicy and almost incense-like note. A process unique to Suntory, it preserves and enhances the rice’s delicately sweet and subtle flavors.
