My heart goes out to everyone who is trying to run a business or an organisation that relies on visitors through their doors to make them viable, their future is very uncertain.

Firstly, I probably need to give you a quick explanation of why I’m making a fancy frock during the lockdown because it must seem rather incongruous.I do really want to have a go at making something properly tailored either for me or for The Boyfriend – I did promise to make him a coat!

I have two different sizes of foot, 2mm and 4mm and I can’t get on with either, I’ve since been told that 3mm is the optimum size for most fabrics but I’m not prepared to risk another mistake when I know I can achieve a good quality result this way instead. The next one is an interesting hem finish which is very useful especially if you want a quality finish on evening or bridal wear. As it happened my letter was passed to Caroline who was the production manager for David in the evening wear workroom and she had done the same course as me a year earlier so she had a fair idea of what I was potentially capable of. If you’re using a particularly fine fabric like chiffon you should stabilise the neck, and any other seams which could stretch, by hand-stitching very narrow cotton tape or ribbon over the seam line on the wrong side of the fabric. This Tencel/Cupro has a nice look whichever side you use but my advice is to be really careful on printed fabrics before reversing any piece labelled RSU.My translation sounds similar to yours Ruth, but I get confused where the overlap occurs – a lot of these techniques are found in ready-to-wear as well! For example, many of us can practice visible mending because we like that it gives longevity to a garment and can look attractive, but others will see it as a reminder of hard times or embarrassment. The organisers took the bold decision to put the whole event online instead which meant that many more people could ‘attend’ from all over the world. In reallity it is a French term for sewing and to me this means sewing a garment going the extra miles to get the best finish possible WITHOUT bulk . I think, people refer to “couture” as to the shortened version of “haute couture” which has been the latest trend in the world of home sewers and bloggers. I love the act of making clothes, the planning, the cutting out, the sewing, because that was taking my mind off what was happening in the real world but how could I justify making new clothes that I had little use for? This isn’t a definitive list of course and over the whole month of August several guest editors shared their brilliant insights to inspire us.
