It teases your conscience with educated wit and versatile improvisation, not to mention the casual flick of a tail about to be cut off.

Doctor Rat is a kaleidoscope of perspectives that never seem to settle but relentlessly shift patterns and moods—from chickens trapped in egg factories deluded by visions of pastoral utopias to pigs faced with the existential emptiness of breeding house sex. Doc Rat has over two dozen regular main and supporting characters by now, not to mention the one-off characters. Enveloping this factual-to-symbolic continuum, the author alludes to the existence of a greater something - an undefined yet pervasive awareness shared by all in the animal kingdom - oh. A referral letter is not essential, but is preferred, and may be a requirement for claims under health insurance. Kotzwinkle has us fail to realize we are all one, as if a sense of all‐oneness among all animals were the answer to human or zoological problems, as if the problem (and necessity) weren't differentness and the answer the intelligent handling of differentness.The novel works best when exploring the viewpoints of individual animals around the world as they build toward a global gathering and when using the actions of Dr. Los Angeles Times A bloodcurdling novel in the spirit of ANIMAL FARM and 1984, DOCTOR RAT is a trip through a laboratory worthy of a Nazi mad doctor, except this doctor is a wisecracking rodent who could have been played by Groucho Marx. In Last and First Men, intelligence is the goal of evolution but Man (at least the First Men -- us) is not its final or best expression. During a stay as the doctor for the coal-mining town of Collie, he drew an anthropomorphic comic strip, DownUnderGround, for the local newspaper. I guess the immediate impression I gleaned from reading Doctor Rat is that humans need to learn to live with the world rather than against it or our long-term future is going to look more like Soylent Green than Star Trek: The Next Generation.
