About this deal

For the rest of the four it will take some time for him to find their individual voices, especially in the beginning but they are largely superfluous to that first series anyways so that's fine. As the Future Foundation contends with the Council of Reeds and the Mad Celestials, Valeria turns to their greatest foe!

The primary issue I have with the material in this book was likely beyond Hickman's control: it collects not a sequential set of issues of The Fantastic Four series but rather a bunch of Fantastic Four stories culled from a handful of different series and miniseries. As the Fantastic Four contends with Dark Reign, an older Franklin arrives from the future with an ominous warning. His Ben and Johnny have the right voice behind them, but it’s obvious his interests land more in the Sue/Reed/Val/Franklin ball park (and that’s ok). The webs that are about to be woven will take you to places you've never been…pit our spectacular heroes against classic villains reloaded, as well as brand-new foes…and make you rethink the whole concept of Spider-Man! He is known for creating the Image Comics series The Nightly News, The Manhattan Projects and East of West, as well as working on Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, FF and S.

The Kirby years essentially invented the "modern" superhero comic book story, which continues to be the baseline by which most other superhero comic books are measured. This confirms for me that I'm not really a fan of the Fantastic Four, but Hickman creates such a large epic story I'm enjoying seeing it come together. Grievng, the surviving members of the Fantastic Four dissolve the team – but from its ashes rises the Future Foundation! Art by Mark Bagley, Barry Kitson, Dale Eaglesham, Lorenzo Ruggiero, Adi Granov, Neil Edwards, Andrew Currie, Paulk Neary, Scott Hanna, Steve Epting, Rick Magyer, Mike Perkins, Nick Dragotta, Mark Brooks, Butch Guice, and Sean Chen. That's the crazy part: after all the great ideas Hickman puts out here, you realize this is only the first half of his run.

There is even a Spider-Man scene about Uncle Ben that is genuinely touching, despite the excessive retreading and retelling of that moment and that alone is a Herculean feat. I love his art but this is the fifth omnibus in a row I've gotten that he contributed on, between the Avengers: The Gathering and Ed Brubaker Captain America Omnis. because there are so many characters in this book that you wanted to see in a comic and they're all in there (i'm including volume 2 in this).
