About this deal

Leo is an 11-year-old vampire – a hundred and eleven that is! Now she has reached that age she needs to complete the Hunt of the Waxing Moon on her birthnight and ‘eat’ her first person. Her vampire family, the Von Mottebergs, have high expectations of her, especially as her mother, Sieglinde, is an extremely old and powerful vampire.

Rodrigo! OMG, he was such a fantastic character! He made me laugh and he reminded me a tad of Colin from Mr. Penguin series. Conversion - The afflicted are able to spread their supernatural virus onto human beings by letting humans drink some of their blood, therefore transforming these humans into the afflicted. It's great to see Minna coming more into her powers as a ghost. She's so determined and loyal to her friend and family, and is a fabulous character. I also loved seeing more about the ghosts beyond the lovely Minna and the horrifying Orphanmaster. Ulf is one of the new characters it's just impossible not to love, he's so funny and cool. And there's a scary new villain, with a really interesting new style, making the conflict very different to the first book, but the stakes may be even higher.A vampire and a ghost being friends is unheard of. It makes no sense. The two factions have despised one another for all eternity. But Leo the vampire and Minna the ghost have battled together side-by-side, they're sisters-in-arms, they're best friends, and they'll have to work together to vanquish a new, deadly threat. Summoned to the Ghostly Realm for the murder of the Orphanmaster, Leo must complete three tasks to prove herself worthy of her unlife, each more treacherous than the last. Can Leo convince the Ghostly Realm of her innocence and earn her freedom, or will she be trapped there forever? He can do all these things, yet he is not free. Nay, he is even more prisoner than the slave of the galley, than the madman in his cell. He cannot go where he lists, he who is not of nature has yet to obey some of nature's laws, why we know not. He may not enter anywhere at the first, unless there be some one of the household who bid him to come, though afterwards he can come as he please. His power ceases, as does that of all evil things, at the coming of the day. Brilliant! It’s a deadly funny, twisty, gothic romp with the loveliest vampire. Sara Ogilvie’s illustrations are the perfect match’ Jenny McLachlan, bestselling author of Land of Roar

I really enjoyed the witty dialogue between Leo and Mina and the gruesome cast of characters in this sequel. Children in KS2, who like reading this genre, will be unable to put this book down. They will also love how Sara Ogilvie's illustrations complete this scary, thrilling adventure story and bring the characters to life. Nocturnal - The sun presents no real danger, only weakening their supernatural abilities. As a result, they prefer to hunt at night and sleep in the day. [1] Elizabeth's "children" even sleep in coffins, though this may merely be an affectation. Elizabeth, by her own admission, prefers to sleep with the curtains drawn to dim the light.Regeneration. The vampire regains 20 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point and isn’t in sunlight or running water. If the vampire takes radiant damage or damage from holy water, this trait doesn’t function at the start of the vampire’s next turn. Physical Trauma - Physical injuries will cause the afflicted pain and, if severe enough, death. Due to their superiority over humans in strength, speed and senses, it is best for a human to attempt to kill an afflicted by using the tactic of surprise against them; although Elizabeth could have easily killed John Lowe, she did not expect to be greeted by him in her suite's elevator and was shot to death before she could properly defend herself. [3] [4] [5] [8] [10] One of the best middle-grade vampire novels I have ever read. So much is happening, the characters are all fascinating in their own way, and it’s funny!

The only slight criticism that I have is that I can see some of the names in the book being difficult for children to pronounce. But aside from that, this is definitely worth a read, no matter your age! Preparations are in earnest, Leo is being fitted for a dress she instantly despises, and her mum has made Leo aware in no uncertain terms, she is to behave, attend and make her proud. So far, then, we have all we may act upon, and let me tell you that very much of the beliefs are justified by what we have seen in our own so unhappy experience. The vampire live on, and cannot die by mere passing of the time, he can flourish when that he can fatten on the blood of the living. Even more, we have seen amongst us that he can even grow younger, that his vital faculties grow strenuous, and seem as though they refresh themselves when his special pabulum is plenty.can become a wolf, a bat, or "come on moonlight rays as elemental dust", or he can become mist, but the "mist is limited, and it can only be round himself". However, if "he be not at the place whither he is bound ( i.e. "his earth-home, his coffin-home, his hell-home, the place unhallowed"), he can only change himself at noon or at exact sunrise or sunset." A vampire and a ghost being friends is unheard of. It makes no sense. The two factions have despised one another for all eternity. But . . . Leo the vampire and Minna the ghost have battled together side-by-side, they're sisters-in-arms, they're best friends, and they'll have to work together to vanquish a new, deadly threat. The characters are brilliant although I am a bit scared of Leo’s mum, she sounds terrifying as a mum and as a vampire. Her dad seems great though, just wrapped up in his library and science experiments.

Concilium - The afflicted possess some limited control over others' minds, which they often use to seduce hapless men and women. In 1977, Elizabeth prevents a producer from taking advantage of Ramona Royale by glancing at him and commanding him to leave, and he does so without question. In 2010, James March employs Elizabeth to hypnotize John Lowe into forgetting that he's the Ten Commandments Killer by offering to give her John's son, Holden, in exchange. When Elizabeth and Donovan go to a showing of Nosferatu in 2015, they attract the attention of a human couple merely by turning their gaze on them, causing the couple to turn their heads from watching the film to watching Elizabeth and Donovan. Elizabeth later uses this power on Donovan when he refuses to go to Will Drake's fashion show, and then on Tristan during the events of said fashion show, preventing him from stabbing an attendee.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

It is,” Leo confirmed hopefully. A tiny, horrible thrill shot up her spine when the vampire looked down at her. Despite her sympathy for Lord Ayman—or what was left of him—Leo couldn’t help but feel sorry for herself too. Was Sieglinde really going to miss Leo’s special night? I won’t tell you what happens, but let’s just say she ends up with a friend called Minna who is a little different just like her and the two of them have to try to fix the problem caused by Leo. His name is The Orphanmaster.
