C.S.: Effect of aspect ratio on barreling contour and variation of total surface area during upsetting of cylindrical specimen. Mater. Des. 28(6), 1907–1913 (2007) Wood pegs are usually used in “dry tumbling”, but denser or coarser media, such as walnut shell or corn cob grit, can be used for faster cutting action if the finish is not important. Kulkarni M, Kalpakjian S (1969) A study of barreling as an example of free deformation. ASME J Eng Ind 91:743–754 Polishing – produces a semi bright finish on many metals, reduces work on polishing wheels and does not damage delicate items. Thus, the barrel detergent is doing a very fine foam, that keep the shots lumped together, a lump that when it is elevated by the vanes inside of barrel, during the rotation, fall on and breaks, pounding with increased force onto jewelry, accentuating the hammering effect, doing a hardening while it’s doing the cleaning! So, most of the effect is on the steel shots side, rather than the jewelry pieces itself.

It’s actually a key measurement taken for each pass of the “hammer” to understand how the metal is changing shape, or deforming. The dies’ shape is another key factor in how well open die forging is executed.

A little note on polishing - this tumbler is designed to polish or burnish your pieces. If you use it with stainless steel shot and water it is not an abrasive - so it will not remove scratches. If you have any scratches you need to put in a little work and remove these by hand before you tumble polish. Tumbling for a long time might round off and smooth out the scratches slightly, but it will not remove them. When polishing platinum casts or handmade items use at least three grades of abrasive paper to level the metal and then follow the barrelling stages above. Remember platinum is a hard metal so ideally it needs these three stages of polishing to attain an expert finish.

Solhjoo, S.: A note on “barrel compression test”: a method for evaluation of friction. Comp. Mater. Sci. 49(2), 435–438 (2010) Altinbalik, T., Çan, Y.: An upper bound analysis and determination of the barrelling profile in upsetting. Indian J. Eng. Mater. Sci. 18(6), 416–424 (2011) Chen, Chen CJ (2000) On the non uniform deformation of the cylinder compression test. J Eng Mater Tech Trans ASME 122:192–197 Shaw C, Avery JP (1980) Forming limits – reliability, stress analysis and failure prevention methods in mechanical design. Century, Chicago, IL, ASME, pp 297–303 For me it’s different; I always keep it straight when is about to respect a technology, or respecting chemicals and dosages, while I also myself cut sometimes the corners, for issues where is possible (for example the tumbler I’m using it’s made by me, from different scavenged items and is so powerful that I can run 3 barrels of 2lb in same time, effortless). A large and powerful tumbler like that, it’s maybe 300 USD, if not more but for me it was almost nothing. We highly recommend using separate barrels for shot and grits. If you are using the same barrel for both it is imperative that every single grain of grit is removed before using again for shot (this is virtually impossible). If one single piece of grit is left in the barrel it will scratch the work you’re trying to polish. It is really difficult to find one tiny bit of grit amongst the shot. It’s a risk best avoided! What if I need a replacement part after I’ve had the barrelling machine for a long time? Barrel burnishing is a type of barreling where no cutting action is desired. The goal is to reduce minute irregularities and produce a clean, smooth surface. The parts are usually tumbled against themselves or with steel balls, shot, rounded-end pins, or ballcones to achieve this. It is also usually a wet process that uses water and a lubricant or cleaning agent, such as soap or cream of tartar. The barrel is not loaded more than half full and if media is used then a 2:1 ratio of media to parts is maintained to keep the parts from rubbing. [5] I have used it on sterling silver & it did give a nice soft polish (with barrelling compound) but not the lovely shiny mirror finish I am used to. When used on ArtClay Copper it didn't smooth the finish as much as my previous shot did - it was almost pitted in some places.
