About this deal

For decades, scientists believed that the body was limited to processing a maximum of one gram of carbohydrate (more specifically glucose) per minute, or 60g per hour. A 2019 study, also on mice, had similar findings. Researchers wrote that in mice prone to developing intestinal tumors, high fructose corn syrup seemed to make the tumors more aggressive and cause them to grow faster, but they were not sure why. Fructose powder helps pastries rise higher, so you won't have to worry about making up for the smaller volume in the recipe. a b Fujisawa, T; Riby J; Kretchmer N (1991). "Intestinal absorption of fructose in the rat". Gastroenterology. 101 (2): 360–367. doi: 10.1016/0016-5085(91)90012-a. PMID 2065911. The results of some studies have confirmed this finding, although others have stated there is no correlation.

Table 1 also shows the amount of sucrose found in common fruits and vegetables. Sugarcane and sugar beet have a high concentration of sucrose, and are used for commercial preparation of pure sucrose. Extracted cane or beet juice is clarified, removing impurities; and concentrated by removing excess water. The end product is 99.9%-pure sucrose. Sucrose-containing sugars include common white sugar and powdered sugar, as well as brown sugar. [34] Table 1. Sugar content of selected common plant foods (g/100g) [35] Food Item

Excess fructose consumption may cause leptin resistance, disturbing body fat regulation and contributing to obesity ( 12, 13). Fructose does not trigger insulin release or the release of hormones, such as leptin, which tells the brain that a person is full. It also does not inhibit hormones that tell an individual’s body that they are hungry. Jana, A.H.; Joshi, N.S.S. (November 1994). "Sweeteners for frozen [desserts] success – a review". Australian Journal of Dairy Technology. 49. Archived from the original on 8 February 2017 . Retrieved 7 February 2017. Fructose consumption increased considerably between 1970 and 2000. While most people associate fructose with fruit, most of our daily fructose now comes from non-fruit sources. A survey from the 1990s showed that the average person had a daily added sugar intake of ~80 grams (equivalent to ~320 calories or 15% of energy intake); about half of this was fructose. Fructose can still be a better alternative to some artificial sugars that may cause undesirable side effects, particularly those involving gut health.
