You can easily apply for this online directly from the DVSA. How much does it cost to get a driving licence? The Highway Code was introduced by the Ministry of Transport, as a provision of the Road Traffic Act 1930. The first edition was published on 14 April 1931, costing the princely sum of one penny. This doesn’t mean that it’s illegal to do any of these things while driving. What it does mean is that they could be a contributory factor in an offence. If you crash while eating something, you might be charged with dangerous driving (section 2 of the Road Traffic Act 1988), with The Highway Code violation providing supporting evidence. It won't be the news you’re hoping for, but if you don't pass your theory test, you’ll have the chance to take it again after 3 working days. There are also no limits on how many attempts you can take. The rest of The Highway Code provisions are good practice, but not necessarily legal requirements. That’s not to say you shouldn’t take them seriously, and breaking The Highway Code may still have legal consequences. You’ll then be shown a series of 14 videos – each roughly a minute long – depicting everyday driving scenarios. You'll have to identify the developing hazard: something that would cause the driver to take action, such as brake or change direction. This could be related to other vehicles, pedestrians or road conditions. One of the videos will have two developing hazards to identify. Your driving instructor will offer as much support as they can to help you pass the theory test. So study hard, stay cool, calm and collected, and you’ll be on your way to being road-ready in no time. How common is it to fail the theory test?

As an example, let’s say you drive through a red traffic light. This is covered by Highway Code rule 109, which states that ‘You MUST obey all traffic light signals’.You can find driving instructors in your area that have been approved by the DVSA. Search for an instructor or driving school. Do I have to use L plates? The DVSA and DVA cater for a range of special requirements, including reading difficulties, hearing difficulties, or specific educational needs. Be sure to get in touch and let them know your requirements ahead of your theory test. How do I get my theory test results?

You can apply for a provisional driving licence from the age of 15 years and 9 months. And you can start driving a car when you’re 17. Where can I find a driving school or driving instructor? The theory test is set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) in England, Wales and Scotland; and by the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) in Northern Ireland. Previously the DVSA recommended a minimum of 20 hours’ theory test revision to fully prepare you for the exam. While this is no longer the official recommendation, it’s still a good rule of thumb. How do I practise for my driving theory test?
