In this episode we’ll meet Jane Drew, a visionary architect of the mid-20th century; and the better-known novelists Iris Murdoch, Agatha Christie, and Muriel Spark. This was made possible in 1915, when then-Minister of Munitions, David Lloyd George, introduced a policy named dilution. The portrayals of the women in this book are not hagiographic: Marie Curie visits a field hospital run by women during the war, but doesn’t lift a finger to help; Emmeline Pankhurst is a neglectful and sometimes cruel mother. I had great fun writing it as the women I “met” — I feel I met them even though sadly most of them are no longer with us — were such vibrant, colorful characters.

Through her story we’ll explore the reinforcement of ‘women’s work’ as an established idea during the 1960s, and meet the women who were fighting back. She has previously held positions at Media Week, the Independent and Financial Times as a journalist.
