About this deal

Articles and guides offer help to anyone starting or running recovery groups at church or in the community. Photograph: Sotheby's/PA The current owner bought the edition, which was printed in 1537, for 25 shillings. It presents his 1534 revision of the New Testament, incorporating his prefaces and notes; and it includes the variants from his original 1525 edition, with an introduction by Isaac Foot that describes both the huge religious and cultural impact of this text and the importance of the revisions Tyndale made to his own works.

This was followed by The Great Bible of 1539, authorised by the King to be read aloud in the services of the Church of England. This text of the New Testiment translated by Tinsdale is perhaps the most readable of the several printed inn the paST 20 YEARS. Each feature in The Life Recovery Bible leads readers to the powerful resources for recovery found in the Holy Scriptures.

Tyndale was inspired by the academic atmosphere to challenge the thinking of the Roman Catholic church and explore the Protestant ideas of Martin Luther and others.

I feel that as long as I have known that the Bible was not written in the language of King James’ England, I have known that the first translation into English was made by Tyndale. Tyndale was increasingly convinced that everyone should be able to read the Bible in their own language. But the damage was done - the genie was out of the bottle and Tyndale's maryrdom initiated a minor avalanche of new English translations. Tyndale’s translations were considered to be such a threat to Church and state that even in Europe he was not safe.Offering so much more to expand your mind and touch your heart than you can possibly hold in your hand. Some words and phrases have been criticised as inaccurate but Tyndale’s translations have remained the basis for many of the versions of the Bible that have followed.

The prefacist, David Daniell, is known for his modern language version published by Yale University Press, but this is the original Tyndale-spelling edition for us purists. In 1526 the English language was undergoing the "great vowel shift" and changing from the language of Chaucer (for whom we need a translation) to Shakespeare. This new edition is the first complete reprint of William Tyndale's pioneering translation of the New Testament from Greek into English. Within four years of his death, four English translations of the Bible were published in England, including Henry the Eighth’s Great Bible.Cooper, and has an introduction by David Daniell, author of the acclaimed biography of Tyndale and Chairman of the Tyndale Society. It was the first Bible of its kind—with beautiful line-art illustrations spread throughout the Bible. After being arrested in Antwerp, Tyndale was executed as a heretic in 1536 and copies of the book discovered in Britain were burnt. We have published a cookies policy, which you should read to find out more about how we use cookies. In popular culture, you might remember a character in a recent movie or tele-movie in which a major character (possibly Thomas Cromwell) is depicted as pushing his copy of Tyndale out of view when representatives of the king come to visit.
