We can’t talk about footwear for the trail without talking about traction. On the Lone Peak 6.0, you’ll find Altra’s Grippy Max Trac outsole. Traction is about more than just being grippy. There needs to be a balance of grip, tread, and durability. And that’s exactly what Altra has done with this outsole. There are five color options for men and four for women. Altra also offers three different foot shape options: Original, Standard, and Slim. The Lone Peak 7 is a broad fitting shoe with a good level of volume in the upper, as it is made on Altra’s ‘original’ last. Altra now offers three different lasts. The ‘original’ last is the widest, with the most volume. Then the ‘standard’ last is narrower through the As a midfoot striker, Kelly said she especially enjoyed the Lone Peak’s ride. “On smooth trails, I felt like I was gliding—almost floating—downhill. It was easy run fast without feeling like the shoes worked against me.”

Topo MTN Racer 2: 5mm heel to forefoot with similar grip and room in the toe box. I’d never run in Altras before, so the zero drop felt a little strange at first, but I did get used to it,” she added. “I’ll wear them for longer distances (upwards of 50K) or have them in a drop bag for later in an ultra race.” Dry Surface Traction The 25mm sole height here provides a satisfactory level of cushioning without taking away the wearer's ability to truly feel the terrain. Though not exactly a technical trail pair like the Adidas Terrex Speed Ultra Trailrunning Women, the Altra Maxtrac outsole is quite grippy all-around. Muddy terrain might require a different pair, but on mixed terrain, they should be more than okay. The midsoles are pliable, providing a more reactive feel that allows the feet nimbly. In general, this 6th iteration has improved the general performance considerably compared to its predecessors. Lone Peak 6: Price UK Key features: Full-length stone guard, Velcro gaiter tabs, FootShape fit, MaxTrac rubber outsole, 5mm canted lugs

The shoe fits true to size with a tight heel cup. Altra’s unique selling point has always been the unique footprint of their shoe that follows the foot shape more naturally (alongside their zero drop).

Obviously, the shoe felt the same regardless, but it’s interesting to think about how much of the cushioning in the heel is from harder 84HC Durometer rubber than that softer foam. Inov-8 Trailfly G270: Zero drop. A firmer more responsive feel. A rounded toe box but, not quite as much volume in the shoes. Most of the shoes fit well for me, except for the width toward the midfoot. I did have some slight overhang, which ended up being uncomfortable if I tied the laces too tight.Being a usability-led shoe brand, Altra often has a few nice features in its shoes. Here it’s the velcro gaiter attachment on the heel, which helps you really waterproof your runs alongside the lacing attachment on the forefoot.

Finally, the lacing is simply phenomenal, mine looked great in pink, and the flat profile with enough stretch and squish makes for a really solid score of 45.5N in our lace slip testing. Conclusion Brycen: "I could not feel the pavement, dirt, tree branches, or anything that was under my foot while running in this shoe. The Lone Peak 6 is one of the best shoes for my knees that I have reviewed. I'd give it a perfect 10 when it comes to protection." The durability has shone through in the past few versions of the Lone Peak. That’s one reason these shoes are fan favorites of long-distance hikers (I should know, I blasted through a different shoe in 400km, with no option but to duct tape my feet!).Delivery timescales are esimates in working days; Public Holidays, Saturday's and Sunday's are NOT classed as working days.
