Description

If you compare its feature set to its price, Dell’s S3422DWG is the clear winner in the ultrawide monitor category. In the minority of games that support 10-bit color depth, you can drop the refresh rate to 144Hz, but for the most part, we recommend going with 160Hz and 8-bit color depth. The LG 34GP83A has 178° wide viewing angles allowing you to watch the screen at basically any angle without the picture degrading in quality in any way (color, brightness, or contrast). Restructured the article to reflect current market prices and availability; added the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 as the 'Best Ultrawide Monitor' and renamed the LG 38WN95C-W as the 'Best Upper Mid-Range Monitor'; removed the LG 34GP83A-B because it's hard to find, and removed the AOC CU34G2X because it went up in price; renamed the Gigabyte M34WQ as the 'Best Budget Monitor' and added the Dell S3422DWG.

Dell’s S3422DWG offers a compelling mix of features and performance at an impressively low price, which makes it the best value in this guide. In addition, the screen has a matte anti-glare coating, which eliminates reflections, but doesn’t make the picture appear too grainy while the steep 1900R curvature adds to the overall immersion. Users with colorimeters can get better results since the dE average can be lowered to around 0.98. that score is better than the more expensive variant, but do take note that these averages can vary between every unit. This also tells us that the two most likely use the same panels but are factory-tuned differently. We've tried different monitor resolutions and observed that a higher resolution provides a sharper and more detailed picture, resulting in a better overall gaming experience. A higher resolution means that the games will look more detailed, and you'll be able to see everything more clearly, including text quality, texture quality, aliasing (jagged edges), and HUD elements. Then again, VA monitors have disadvantages of their own such as significantly slower pixel response time speed, and they don’t have as wide viewing angles nor as consistent colors. In our years of working with monitors, we've observed that a monitor's refresh rate is a critical factor in determining its overall performance. Refresh rate refers to the number of times the display updates the picture being displayed per second. A higher refresh rate means the screen is updated more frequently, resulting in a smoother, more fluid motion and less motion blur.

It has good peak brightness and good reflection handling, and it's good to use in rooms with a few lights around, but glare from strong light sources is distracting. Like the Dell, its 34-inch screen has a 3440x1440 resolution with good text clarity, but its narrow viewing angles limit its office performance because the image washes out from the sides, which isn't ideal for sharing your screen with others. On the plus side, it has excellent image accuracy, so images are life-like without any sort of calibration. The best monitor we've tested with an ultrawide screen is the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9/G95NA S49AG95, which is versatile for different uses. It's considered a super ultrawide monitor because it has a 49-inch screen and a 32:9 aspect ratio, equivalent to placing two 27-inch monitors side-by-side. This provides a lot of screen space for multitasking, and it has an aggressive 1000R curve that brings the edges of the screen closer to you. Still, it may take some time to get used to, especially if you aren't used to curved screens. The stand included with the LG 34GP83A-B doesn’t have any handicaps in ergonomics since it still offers tilt, swivel, and height adjustments. You can also swap it out with a VESA mount if you want to save space or if you have a multiple display array with your setup. Our only complaint about it is its size, but that’s a fair trade-off for reliability and stability in a premium monitor. Most ultrawide displays have a 34-inch screen size, but there are larger ones up to 49 inches, which are known as super ultrawide monitors. On top of that, these displaystend to have curved screens to bring the edges closer toyou. When looking for an ultrawide monitor, it's important to consider what you need it for and your budget, as there are options available at different price points. The Odyssey G5 has one HDMI and one DisplayPort for connectivity, so you’ll have no problem hooking up your PC. The display can be tilted, but its stand isn’t height adjustable with is a little disappointing considering how premium the actual screen is.

This display’s key feature is a peak refresh rate of 165Hz, which is the highest speed you’ll find in this guide. It supports HDR (high dynamic range), which guarantees you’ll see vibrant colors, and is compatible with AMD’s FreeSync Premium technology. Oddly, this monitor isn’t compatible with Nvidia’s G-Sync, which is its only real downside when it comes to gaming performance. The resolution is another critical aspect of a gaming monitor. The resolution is measured in pixels; the more pixels a monitor has, the sharper the image will be. A higher resolution results in a clearer and more detailed picture. You will find all the standard image settings as well as some advanced adjustment tools such as color temperature fine-tuning (in 500K increments), four gamma presets and 6-axis hue/saturation. Response times for the LG 34GP83A-B are excellent overall when you are playing at its maximum 160Hz refresh rate. There is no need to use its Overdrive feature beyond its Normal setting since it is practically blur-free. Be wary of setting the latter too high since it will induce unnecessary overshoot with no noticeable improvement to the monitor’s already excellent motion handling. At the time of this writing, it’s the only 3440×1440 ultrawide gaming monitor with official certification.

Restructured article to reflect how people are looking for ultrawide monitors; removed the 'Best Gaming' and 'Best Super Ultrawide' categories because it doesn't fit into the scope of the article; added the Dell S3422DWG and replaced the Gigabyte M34WQ with the HP OMEN 34c because the Gigabyte is becoming hard to find; updated Notable Mentions based on changes. inch Ultrawide screens aren’t the sharpest, but they are great for productivity and immersive gaming. You get more horizontal space and just the right amount of pixel density to make games and movies look detailed and crisp. Take note that you are going to need a meaty GPU to meet the 160Hz refresh rate, especially on modern titles. While there are some ultrawide monitors in the mid-range price category, like the LG 34GP83A-B, most of them don't offer any performance advantages over the models you can get in the lower mid-range price category, like the Dell S3422DWG, which is very good overall and performs well for different uses. It has a 34-inch screen, so it offers less space than the LG 40WP95C-W, but it's still big enough to open windows side-by-side, and it has an 1800R curve that helps bring the edges of the screen closer to you.
