What I love generally speaking is the way this author brings a strong emotional core to the centre of all the stories he writes – the ongoing interpersonal relationships (I’m the biggest fan of Phil you will find) are always layered beautifully into each individual plot, whilst the supporting cast are given just as much depth. The writing is always immersive and completely addictive – as a reader you genuinely live with these people for a while. No different with Love Like Blood which I read fast, often angrily, the best reads are the ones that grip you by the heartstrings, not letting go and send you through a gamut of emotions as you head towards the finale. In this review, meanwhile, we’re pleased to report that all that passion has been channeled into what is a gripping and at times brutal story. It feels relevant. It feels conflicted. It’ll give you a knot in the stomach. And, it’s pretty uncomfortable reading, too.

Nuff said about the main plot line. There are plenty of zigs & zags to keep you guessing, especially The author’s rage, together with his skill as a crime writer, makes this a gripping and genuinely tragic story. When Detective Inspector Nicola Tanner's partner is murdered in their own home she is left seething with the need for vengeance and justice. She has been investigating a series of honour killings in the Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities and she is convinced the murder of her partner is connected, but Tanner is pulled from the case, put on compassionate leave. She won't leave the investigation alone though and drags Tom Thorne into her case; unofficially of course. The book contains all the usual elements of a successful thriller - there are hit men, red herrings galore, more twists than a Curly Wurly and above all an engaging team in Thorne and Tanner. This book is nothing short of excellent and gives great insight into honour based violence, which is something that is more common than we realise.

The threads in the plot line are well thought out and brought together, although a little suddenly at the end. I was a little confused with the chapter that indicated that a body had been found in a reservoir and there was only a minor reference to explain this later on.

The way they trap the culprits is laughable, with the most obvious mole ever. And the whole chase at the end is ridiculous because they blow their cover far too early. There has not actually been anything specific said between the broker and the undercover cop and they haven't committed any crimes when the undercover police officers reveal themselves. If I was them, I would have let myself get arrested, any half decent lawyer could have gotten the charges dropped. Learning the unpleasant differences between crime fact and crime fiction...". But DI Nicola Tanner needs to catch the people who killed her girlfriend. DI Nicola can't imagine life without Susan the woman she loved. Still loved. An intelligent, hugely entertaining thriller that treats its subject with sensitivity. It includes gasp-inducing moments of drama and some ingenious twists.
