The Martians were enormously successful for Cadbury’s, both in terms of sales and also in brand awareness; the adverts are still remembered fondly to this day. They were voted the television Ad of the Century by UK trade magazine Campaign and the second best television advert of all time in a Sunday Times and Channel 4 poll in 2000 (the Guiness surfer advert from a year earlier took first place). ITV also crowned the Smash Martians number one in its Best Ever Ads list of 2005. The adverts of 1970s and their catchphrase, 'For Mash get Smash', were voted television advert of the century by Campaign Magazine, and second-best television advert of all time in a poll of April 2000 conducted by The Sunday Times and Channel 4, beaten by Guinness' Surfer advertisement from 1999. What a great idea to put potatoes in the slow cooker and smash them when I get home from work. I very seldom make smashed potatoes during the week because they too much time, but this is the perfect solution.

The original 1970s advertisements have been featured in several "best ever television advertisements" lists. The brand has since been sold by Cadbury and is now owned by Premier Foods who, using their Batchelors brand, launched a 'healthier recipe' version in 2006. [4] Accolades [ edit ] Meanwhile, melt a tablespoon of butter and 50ml/2fl oz of whole milk in a pan over a low heat, until combined. Put the potatoes in a large pan of water over a high heat. Add a pinch of salt and bring to the boil. Devised by ad agency Boase Massimi Pollitt, many will remember the 30-second advert. In one of the adverts, uploaded to Youtube, we see seven Martians - one red and six blue - discussing humans around a table. The red Martian asks them if on their "last trip did they discover what the Earth people eat." One responds that they eat a great many of these - with the camera zooming in on a big potato.

Amazing Crispy Chicken

Where I live, in Canada, the one person I know who makes mashed potatoes with a mixer calls them "whipped potatoes." So, I guess, in American terms, what I've always eaten is "smashed" Who'd've thunk it? Use butter and a touch of oil. Because butter = flavour, oil ensures more even and better browning and crispiness. Can’t use just butter because it burns in the oven at high temperatures.

However, it was not until 1974 that Smash became popular in the convenience food market after Cadbury launched an advertising campaign by agency Boase Massimi Pollitt featuring the Smash Martians, who would watch humans preparing mashed potato the traditional way on television instead of using potato granules, and laugh at them. [2] [3] For a long time, I used the same big baking potatoes that I made roasted potatoes with to make smashed potatoes. However, after trying new potatoes, I can see why many people choose them instead.

Ingredients

Cook in a large pan of boiling salted water over a medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until tender. Yukon Golds (pictured here) have a more intense flavor than Russets, and many people experience them as even a bit buttery, but they also have enough starch to mash up fluffy, they're always a great option, especially if you're making lower-fat versions of mashed potatoes without as much butter in the mix. Even better are Yellow Finns, if you can find them. Both Yukon Golds and Yellow Finns bring so much natural flavor to the party, that just mashing them with a bit of butter and salt is going to taste better than most other versions of mashed potatoes.
