Want your garden to look like a freshly cut football field? A rear roller produces a striped effect – gently flattening the grass for a well-manicured result. Cordless means poor battery life, right?

The grass bag has a plastic top and soft sides. This means it can be flattened for easier storage, too. You wouldn’t expect a modern lawn mower to be without a mulching mode and the WORX WG734E.1 doesn’t disappoint. It features a handy mulching mode that can be easily activated leaving you with perfect mulch for your garden every time. The excellent battery performance is a big contributor to the success of this model, even more so when you consider how much more affordable the WG779E.2 is compared to other battery operated models. Better still, the batteries are part of the Powershare range from WORX, being interchangeable with a range of compatible cordless power tools. If you are thinking of buying other cordless garden or power tools, this is a great opportunity to save some money and extend the runtime of your various tools. When you need a mower that’s light in weight and going to get in the smaller areas of your lawn, this may well be the best option for you. Yes it will take longer to mow the entire area, but if it fits and there’s no rush, then the WG779E.2 could be the cordless mower of choice. In turbo mode, you can easily take grass from about half a foot to an inch — though if you know how to mow a lawn you will realize it is a big lawncare mistake to cut so much in one go. As with all smaller cordless lawn mowers the grass box is not going to hold as much grass cuttings as its larger counterparts, however 30 litres is a comparable for a mower of this size. 30 Litres allows longer periods of use without needing to empty grass clippings as often. Another great feature of this mower is an easy to see battery gauge on the top of the mower; you would think this is standard with all cordless mowers, however, this is not the case. Well done WORX for including this!

There are six height positions to choose from, with the minimum being 20 millimetres while the highest is 70 millimetres. You can start at a higher setting and go down as you progress so that small grass will not miss a piece of the action. WORX WG779E.2 Cutting Diameter Also, metal blades are sharper with more cutting power for the most satisfactory result. You can sharpen the blade, unlike a plastic blade, so that you can cut effectively for a tidier finish.I personally use the WORX WG779E.2 and have a similar sized lawn. I have had no issues and it cuts well, is lightweight and is such great value for money. If you’re conscious about how eco-friendly your tools are then you’ll be pleased to discover that this product gives off zero emissions and even better, its ultra-quiet function means that noise pollution is kept to a minimum too. One of the most notable things about the power system here is that the rechargeable batteries are power shareable, so if you’ve got other WORX tools in the shed, you’ve now got two spare batteries. I really struggled with this mower to find any downsides. The features are great and all seem to work well for a mower at this price point. The build quality cannot be faulted and it performs as it should. While the handles cannot be adjusted to accommodate different heights, they do come with soft cushion to help reduce vibrations and any fatigue when using it. Most will find it comfortable to use for the 30 minute runtime. Grass Collector and Edging

For example, the 20mm setting is one of the lowest settings on any mower, meaning an incredibly close cut to the lawn. While it is recommended to use this setting all the time, people that mow frequently during peak growing season can use this setting to produce a neat and tidy cut close to the ground, like on an ornamental lawn. This is a great selling point for many UK buyers, as weather conditions mean we often need to leave the grass to grow longer before its suitable to mow it. Knowing this mower handles longer grass with ease is a good sign for any buyer based in the UK. But what can we expect from this product? Is it worth the money and will it perform as well as we would expect? Let’s take a look. Main Features Also the power system is completely electric so it produces zero emissions and works extremely quietly. Which is quieter? Well there’s not much between them but I would say that the WORX is slightly quieter due to the “Mute technology” that WORX claim makes their mower barely audible from 10 metres. The mower is light and easy to turn on its side for cleaning. I just use a stiff hand brush to sweep leftover grass from the blade area, base and wheels before I put it away. A 30L grass collector is included with the WG779E.2, meaning you won’t need to stop it during your mowing to empty the box. This capacity is perfect for smaller lawns, having ample space for lots of clippings, even on those mows where you remove a lot of length from the lawn.

I even spotted a roller at the rear for those who want a striped effect — I’ll leave it to you more confident mowers to test that one out! If there’s a negative, I’d say the Worx WG779E does become sluggish over long, wet grass, even with the reinforced axels, which can cause clogging in the collector. But overall, I found it to be a reliable, affordable cordless mower that is easy to use and store. Pros My first cut was on long, messy grass. There are patches of couch grass in my lawn and a few straggly dandelions so I thought I might have left it a bit long between cuts. You can change the cutting height using the lever on the front of the mower and on my first cut I left it high as I thought it could benefit from a pre-trim. In retrospect it didn't need it and would have handled the longer patches of grass with ease (and has since). For example, the easy-start feature is far more preferable to the pulling/recoil method of the petrol lawn mower which, if you’ve ever used you will know, can be a nightmare and often painful to start. The easy-on safety switch works like a charm. WORX WG743E.1 User Manual The grass box on the WORX WG779E.2 is very easy to remove by simply lifting the flap and unhooking. The grass clippings empty from the box with no obstructions. This is a hard topped collection box with a carry handle at the top. The WG779E.2 is relatively lightweight at 12kg, and while there are lighter models designed for small gardens, few have the same power and runtime. So, the mower is easy enough to move across lawns, even if the grass is denser, with the large wheels offering good stability and manoeuvrability. There are six settings that range from 2cm to 8cm, but what is most interesting is that this adjustment can be made with a single easy to adjust lever – nothing makes a product more appealing than ease-of-use. Cutting Diameter The light weight, small size and fold away handles make this mower excellent for smaller to medium lawns or lawns with smaller strips of grass and for storage where space is limited. As mentioned before, you can use Turbo or Eco modes to cut your lawn. I have used both and find the Eco mode is sufficient for regular summer cuts. I think I might need Turbo for the first cut after winter and would use it for cutting meadow-like lawns. Having not tested this mower on wet grass, I can't say how it performs, but based on the first mow (of a rather unruly lawn) I don't think it will struggle too much. The Worx WG779E.2 is a well-built, sturdy mower designed to last. My only gripe would be that the cutting blade may need replacing after a certain amount of use, but this is a standard maintenance requirement for most mowers, and it’s easy enough to do yourself or take it to a professional. Additionally, you may need to replace the batteries more often if you’re using the mower frequently or in particularly tough conditions (such as on hilly terrain or in wet weather). WORX 40V WG779E.2 Verdict At 34cm the steel cutting blade is suitable for small and medium lawns, although we think it works best in smaller areas up to 200m2. The blade is premium quality steel that is razor sharp, producing a pristine cut that leaves the grass looking good while encouraging healthy regrowth.
