For a strength test, I twisted the headband to see how much punishment they can take, I wasn’t able to leave any permanent damage, which is good, they’ll stand up to daily use without any problems. As for the build quality, while the headphones are light, they’re made from sturdy materials. The ear cups are made from strong plastic that doesn’t feel cheap at all. Also, the headband is made from metal, so it will be able to retain its rigid shape after a long time of use.

To put things on a more objective scale, I tested the headphones against the powerful Sony WH-1000XM4 using my go-to airplane drone and crowd-noise simulators through studio monitors. When A/B testing the two, it was clear the Sony pair had the edge at both ends of the spectrum. Against the airplane drone, it outdid the WH950NB both in the velocity of noise removed, and in the expanse of frequencies. The WH950NB enters a competitive market, up against established brands like Bose and Sony but acquits itself very well. With fine build quality and very comfortable with a comprehensive app, the excellent sound quality is the icing on the cake. The overall impression was of an even-handed and smooth profile adapting itself to any style with musicality being the keyword. The soundstage, as befits a good set of headphones, was particularly notable. While the Dynamic mode is tuned for fun and harmonises well with modern music styles, the Classic mode aims for a more neutral reproduction. Accordingly, the low-frequency reproduction was leaner and had more punch in the upper bass range, even if the imaging reached further down. In contrast, the mid and lower bass range in Dynamic mode appeared more substantial, sounding richer but not too powerful, meaning bass-oriented productions were reproduced powerfully. Meanwhile, the Ambient sound mode is quite effective. With it active, the mics deliver a slightly tweaked version of your surroundings with an emphasis on speech. If you’re looking to dabble in some of the latest Bluetooth technology, then the WH950NB is worth considering. These headphones support Bluetooth 5.3 for fast transmission and a stable connection. You’ll also be able to stream audio using LDAC as long as you have a device that supports it. Battery Life

Dedicated audio fans may want more, particularly from noise cancelling, but for everyday use I found these to be excellent. I like how the Edifier WH950NB eases you into tweaking settings and making adjustments, as someone who usually simply puts on headphones and accepts the status quo it's interesting to be able to easily customise the experience. There's no doubt that, right off the bat, these impressed me. The soundstage is convincingly wide yet well-contained. Unlike some that over-reach themselves in pursuit of bigger sound, these headphones know their limits - and they're better for it. They also claim a 40kHz top-end that I was eager to hear. The fabric material feels soft yet hard wearing and the colour doesn’t look as boring in real life as it does in pictures. Again, not a complaint but a compliment. The low frequencies were reproduced very well with good speed and texture. The timbre was authentic and the decay very natural. The mid bass was more emphasised and this did bleed a little into the midrange, imbuing it with some extra warmth. Listening via Bluetooth extended the bass and added some extra weight.

The full sized ear cups fully enclose your ears and they’re incredibly soft too, adding to the comfort. Incredible Battery Life

For testing audio performance, we used a Samsung Galaxy phone, changed the sampling rate to 96kHz in the app, and left the EQ on the Classic setting. Light in weight and well balanced on the head, the WH950NB proved to be extremely comfortable and stable and once the earpieces were adjusted to align the drivers with the ears, the best sound was obtained. The ear pads were very soft and moulded themselves to my ear profile and the padding on the headband was also very soft. Similar to Puro headphones, the WH950NB will even allow you to cap audio at 85dB to protect your hearing, though I never crank the volume that loud anyway. The Edifier Connect app (available for Android and iOS) has a clean, easy-to-navigate interface, but we could do without the many distracting outbound links. The main screen shows an image of the product along with its remaining battery life.

The treble felt like the most spread-out region in this frequency response. There’s a clear high-end detail to be had here, as the output in this range has the most texture. You’ll get some nice air and wispiness out of the timbre here, and it all appears very crisp and pleasant. SummaryOne thing that I was extremely happy to see is the ability to switch between ambient mode, ANC, AND regular mode right on the headphones. Most other wearable audio devices I’ve reviewed don’t allow you to switch to just regular mode from the actual device- I’d have to use the app. That’s a major annoyance, especially if you’re using a device that’s not compatible with the app. That’s if you’re listening to the music right out of the box. Digging into the Edifier Connect app, you’re presented with some powerful tools to customize your sound. Let’s start off with the power EQ. When you open the built-in equalizer, you’ll see the four bands that you can adjust. Each band has a volume range between -9dB and +3dB. Bringing some of the greatest features from the Stax’s headphones in a more consumer-friendly product is a great feat that Edifier should take a bow for.

With a Hi-Res certification, the expectation of extended treble was high. I am pleased to say that I was not disappointed. The high frequencies were clear, clean, bright and extended yet also smooth with no harsh peaks. Detail retrieval was high and there was a good sense of “air” in the upper region. Their earcups remind me of Sony’s mainline headphones, but the frame on the WH950NB actually feels more durable. The hard plastic is supported by a steel headband, which gives the WH950NB a stable feel. It also maintains a simple elegance, not appearing too bland or flashy. The earpads are really soft too, and they’ll fit snugly around your ears with minimal fatigue. Design & Functionality

Plenty to Like for the Price

They not only have a modern, stylish look they’re well built too. I expected nothing less from Edifier to be honest. Each component fits together well, there aren’t any sharp edges, loose bits of plastic or dropped stitches in the travel case.
