Description

The name ‘Little Beach Street Bakery’ refers to a series of novels written by Jenny Colgan. The books tell the heartwarming story of a woman who moves to a new town to get away from her troubles. As it is, what we end up with is that rare beast: a sequel that is actually better than its predecessor! I know; that hardly ever happens, right? Well, in this case, Jenny Colgan has not only managed to bottle the magic she captured in the first book but she's plugged it into the amp and turned it up to eleven.

Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan | Goodreads

Someone had made a gigantic star out of cardboard bedpans. It was kind of revolting and charming at the same time. Then, the end. Well the happy end was okay, but not nearly cute enough. At all. And before the final happy end, of course there had to be some total, life-threatening drama. Which had to do with the sea, just as in the first part. Okay, they live on a tiny island, so heavy storms and huge waves and whatnot are probably most likely, but still. And after that Polly is the most wonderful heroine of all time, blah, blah, blah. How could it have been any different? In this novel, I enjoyed getting to know Polly who at the age of thirty-something has to find a new career when the graphic design business she started with her boyfriend goes bankrupt. With so few options at her disposal and rent being so expensive in town, she decides to take residence in a small beach town that seems to be inhabited by folks that are set in their ways.Colgan has a wide fan base who find her light novels as warm and delicious as the sweets in her books. Her latest, though, is half-baked. And there is many a challenge for Polly to face, this including the demons of her past that she worked so hard to escape and the manner in which her relationship with her gorgeous boyfriend keeps evolving. And the people and atmosphere of the small seaside village setting (which the author reveals IN THIS INTERVIEW was inspired by the real-life St Michael's Mount in Cornwell). So well-written. I don't want to say too much about the actual story because it could only litter the review with spoilers but I will say that at least one character from the first book dies. Oh, yes... the author's pulling no punches with this one. Polbearne, a quaint seaside village off the coast of England, is based off the actual island St. Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. Colgan’s descriptions of the village were thorough, detailing not only the people and their way of life but of the town itself and the sole causeway being the only way to come and go on the island. While the people in the village weren’t always the most friendly (since they saw Polly as an outsider), the village itself sounded like a such a lovely place to reside with its small shops on cobbled streets and a ruined yet still charming castle on the top of a hill overlooking the island.

Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery: The best feel good Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery: The best feel good

Polly is a firm favourite of mine, I loved her character and her personality since the first book so it was wonderful to be reunited with her as she continued her journey and her life on Mount Polbearne. But with a turn of events and other issues popping up, I really felt for Polly as she faced all of this. I really really rooted for Polly, and I was absolutely gripped to the story wanting to know what would happen next and how Polly would cope with everything. I REALLY want to talk about all the events but I’m desperate not to spoil anything, but there is lots of love, friendship, emotion, obstacles, and lots of bread too! I absolutely LOVE Jenny Colgan’s books, they always fill me with such happiness and I love jumping right in and immersing myself in her novels, so I was VERY excited about Little Beach Street Bakery. I think the biggest reason that I didn't like or finish this the first time and why I gave this 2 stars now is that I got exhausted by the character of Polly. She just seemed fixated on moving on from her long-term boyfriend and instead of baking (there is that) we just focused on her romances with two men. And one of those men was inappropriate so I ended up disliking him for the rest of the book. I also thought the book was super short-sighted with regards to the slowly dying village deciding it didn't want a bridge into it. There are near misses by people throughout the book dealing with almost being washed away trying to get there so it made zero sense to me that this was a thing to debate. However, I pludged into this story because of two reasons: firstly, I wanted to read something about Christmas, secondly, the setting of this book is Cornwall, the place where I spent an amazing week with my British friend in summer 2019. This is the third book of the series but it's not obligatory to read the first books to understand the events in the third one. I love Jenny Colgan's other books - The Bookshop on the Corner and Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe - but this one didn't hit as well as those ones. They had a design business - with her on the business and Chris on the design - but, despite everything, it fell through. Polly had worked her fingers to the bone. She had never stopped pitching, closing, discounting; doing anything to get sales for her talented other half."With no great relief, Polly and Chris are forced to give up...everything. But...she assumed that they would still have each other. ...she'd looked at him, really looked at him, and he'd said grimly, "It's over."Now, with no business, no flat and no boyfriend... Polly is forced to reevaluate everything she thought she knew. Right now, she wanted to sit in her eyrie of a sitting room at the very top of the house, drink tea, eat a cheese twist and simply relax and enjoy the view: the sea, ever changing; clouds scudding past so close she could touch them; the little fishing boats bobbing out across the water in faded greens and browns, their winches and nets heavy behind them, looking tiny and fragile against the vast expanse of the sea. She just needed five minutes’ peace and quiet before heading down to the bakery to relieve her colleague Jayden for the lunchtime shift.

Summer at Little Beach Street Bakery - Goodreads

Polly Waterford is the happiest she has ever been, and it isn’t just because summer has come to Mount Polbearne. Polly is infatuated by the seaside town. The only thing she loves more than Polbearne is her boyfriend. But then Polly begins to bake, starting out slowly, experimenting with a few new recipes and producing all manner of goodies. In the kneading of floor and making of bread, Polly begins to find meaning.
