But we're including it here because if you can afford to stretch your budget you'll get good contrast and vibrant colour, coupled with sensational upscaling and advanced smart features. This results in a noticeably brighter image, as you can see in this EOTF, but the TV's peak luminance is the same. The TCL has a full-array local dimming feature, which the Samsung doesn't have, and it displays a much wider color gamut, so it's a better choice for watching HDR content. The Samsung TU8000 comes with a simplified version of Tizen OS, with fewer animations and a simpler interface.

Sadly, it doesn't support any DTS formats, which is disappointing, as many UHD Blu-rays use DTS for their lossless audio tracks. TheSamsung TU8000 TV is available in the UK, US and Australia, with the only difference being the 85-inch variant available in the US – instead of 82-inch in the UK and Australia. The features of the TCL 55RP620K are largely set by the Roku system and that’s no bad thing, as Roku is an excellent platform. On the other hand, the LG has wider viewing angles, handles reflections better, and because ofits IPS panel, has wider viewing angles. The lights of windows and advertising boards don’t spill into the nearby dark and the picture remains clean. While we did not review the smaller Samsung UE46D8000 or UE40D8000, there should not be any major difference in picture performance given similar specifications bar screen size. Unfortunately, it has narrow viewing angles, so the sides of the screen fade and appear non-uniform if you're sitting too close to the screen. In some respects, the TCL even rivals the more expensive Samsung TU8000 with this level of source material.

That gap isn’t enormous but it’s worth measuring up to check that the TV will comfortably fit on your TV unit. But it’s also pre-baked, so you can’t make adjustments in the Expert settings menu, whereas Standard opens up gamma control and colour space adjustments, for those who like to tinker. Many will prefer the attractive cooler tones of Standard, which is also slightly brighter, but if you’re looking for the most accurate picture and colour palette, Movie is the option to go for. We've added two new videos demonstrating the local dimming feature (or lack thereof in this case) with real content. On the other hand, the Samsung has more accurate colors out-of-the-box, better reflection handling, faster response time, and 4:4:4 support, which is important if you want to use your TV as a PC monitor. The Samsung TU8000 sits on a pair of unhelpfully wide plastic feet and you’ll need a TV unit that’s at least 103cm wide to support it. However, it’s worth noting that one of the HDMI ports will become unusable in this position due to being rear-facing, which is a shame considering what’s there is already a fairly stingy offering. On the upside, it has low input lag and a decently fast response time, but it lacks advanced gaming features like variable refresh rate (VRR) support or HDMI 2.

The Samsung UE55D8000 can receive Freeview HD broadcasts via its DVB-T2 tuner, and, new for this year, has an input for a Satellite dish, too (the TV also carries the “Freesat” branding in the UK market). It's much worse than most comparable TVs, and the Noise Reduction setting doesn't improve it at all. Even with brightness turned up high in settings, you will likely find yourself wanting more, especially with dark scenes in well-lit rooms. It captures skin and the desert scrub with realistic tones that are hard to match at anywhere near this budget. The Samsung has a better response time and it has a black frame insertion feature to help reduce motion blur, and the input lag is much lower. We've just posted our 8-month video update with our latest findings on temporary image retention, burn-in, and more! The set benefits from two tuners, one terrestrial (which is regular Freeview HD), the other generic HD satellite. On the other hand, the VA panel on the Samsung delivers a much better dark room performance with an excellent contrast ratio and incredible black uniformity.
