The correct choice will have a green tick and if you have chosen the wrong one, it will be highlighted in red. Because lots of children enjoy reading, they can improve their vocabulary without even realising it.

It would be possible to list many thousands of words but the selection below showcases the kind of unusual language your child might encounter.

No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Encourage your child to ask about words they do not understand so that they actively seek out new word definitions.

We knew our son needed a much better vocabulary to do well in the Birmingham 11 Plus Exam but we didn't really know where to start. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Setting aside time for activities and using the correct terms to explain activities will also help to develop your child's vocabulary as they will be encountering terms that might not crop up in day-to-day conversations. When your child is reading, either by themselves or with an adult, encourage them to have a notebook with them to jot down interesting and challenging vocabulary and phrases. We used a Private Tutor to prepare for the 11 Plus, and they recommended that we use the full 40 part vocabulary course as part of the process rather than vocabulary books. Our 11 plus vocabulary list includes 500 words that we recommend your child should know before their exam. Each page has a little exercise to do, and while my son got massively fed up with 10 minute tests and the odd practise paper, he never minded doing these!

Download our 11+ Vocabulary List- Download our free Vocabulary List with 500+ words and work through twenty words each week with your child. This way, children can widen their vocabulary pool gradually and grasp the meaning of each individual word before moving on to the next one.
