Description

I loved the sibling relationships between Hanan and her twin brother and younger siblings. And I really loved how we see her friendships too and that it isn’t perfect but they are able to apologise and reconcile. Her publisher, from Usborne Publishing, gave a very moving speech during the reception. She read the prototype, “I physically could not put it down.” Usborne is a top children’s book publishing company and receives loads of books to review and decide whether or not to publish. Lindquist said that Usborne decided to publish You Think You Know Me because of Ayaan’s outstanding writing, as well as the compelling message the book represents. Fritha said when they asked themselves what messages they want future generations to be reading, Ayaan’s novel became a no-brainer. This is a genre I like to see being written. The subject is too important to brush aside and the more readers these titles find, the better. You Think You Know Me is a hard-hitting, modern tale of racism and religious duty which speaks out against violence and intolerance.

Home > Having grown up in an area of London with a diverse Muslim community, this was such a relevant, deeply emotional read that definitely gave me a deeper understanding into the experiences and fear that friends, neighbors and many other people in my community have had to face on a daily basis. You Think You Know Me by Ayaan Mohamud Book Review: You Think You Know Me by Ayaan Mohamud

Hanan has always been the good, quiet, well-behaved girl that she not wants to be, but has to be. She’s already a target for bullying by a group at school her friends call The Braids (mean girls amped up) and being loud, speaking up, would make her more of a target for their hate. Even her teachers use her for her image as their flawless, poster child for a Muslim student at the school. But Hanan has dreams, wishes, and desires to speak her mind and stand up for herself and every other person that gets the same racist undertones (which is just blatant racism most of the time.)

About Ayaan Mohamud

This was a struggle, because it was the first book I ever wrote. I’ve never written anything to completion like that before so I was trying to learn how to actually write a story, then try to weave all of these very sensitive issues and handle them in a way that would be appropriate for a young audience. But you need to be honest with children and teens and not shy away from certain things, it just needs to be age appropriate. So that’s something that I learned as I wrote the first draft and went through a few more edits as well.

I genuinely loved Hanan, who was such a warm, brave and fiercely loving character who, despite the hardships and vitriol thrown her way, has powered through with a dignity, integrity and determination that I am in awe of—living in her shoes (if only for the day and half it took me the finish this) was a deeply moving, and eye-opening experience that I won’t soon forget. You Think You Know Me by Ayaan Mohamud is the story of Hanan. Hanan is Muslim. Hanan has been the unfortunate recipient of racist bullying since she started at her school. A recent tragedy, one that directly affects the school, vamps up racism towards Hanan and other Muslims. Hanan has always been told ‘silence is gold’ but she starts to question this when things become life threatening. This was such a thought-provoking read. The author has woven the history of Hanan's family fleeing Somalia as refugees, the loss of their father who was murdered during their escape, their faith as Muslims and prejudice that they face, the financial struggle for Hanan's mother and pressure felt by the eldest son to provide for the family. I'd recommend this book to fans of The Hate U Give and I Am Thunder. I hope it brings change. Somehow, Hussein and I managed to get through the next three years together in one piece. It never stopped being hard, but it did get a little easier. We made a few new friends, began making some good memories, and we stayed well away from Luke and his mates. My debut Young Adult book, You Think You Know Me, was born of those thoughts, and I realised what had been missing was voices for children. Accessible narratives of drama, adventure, heartache, legend, joy, drama, myth, featuring Somali characters. The two of us went our separate ways after that. Me, to Grafton Grammar, and Hussein, to Northwell High. We became different people with different dreams, but we were always still two halves of the same whole – Hanan and Hussein. Thankfully, that’s never changed; we’re both still there for each other when it matters.
