There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. Especially considering it opens with some introduction about how the trip broadened her horizons and deepened her relationship with her mother (who she traveled with) or some such thing, and I rarely saw evidence of that on the page. But nothing deeper about her relationships or, really, about her development as an artist -- which would have been an interesting angle (I happen to be reading David Michaelis' biography of Charles Schulz now, so maybe that's biasing me).

it remains to be seen if knisley will look back on this work and think "oh my god, i was such an EMBARRASSMENT! She also mentions just getting little presents from her parents for Christmas because the trip is a big deal, which also leads me to believe that her folks are footing the bill. but i hope that even if it eventually embarrasses her, she will also be able to read it and see it for what it is - the carnet that all of us who made a similar journey wish we could have made. UHT milk in France is marked as keeping for three months unopened, although it is actually usable for six to nine months.

and then like a page later she talks about how americans are all fat and ugly and how that's a culture shock for her. i'm sure she can knock a nice detailed architectural drawing out of the park when she really wants to--there were hints of serious talent in here. I decided I wanted to read through all of Lucy Knisley's books, and went back to this first one, which I had never read before. But I wanted to go again just so I could walk those streets, try those cafes and restaurants, and eat all those delicious croissants and chocolate mousse and chocolate fondant and baguettes and fois gras and onion soup and my God.

If some outside commentators still find the French love of long-life milk a culinary misnomer, with a global shift towards UHT milk, they may have to start getting used to it.Overall I enjoyed the read and drawing style, however if it was supposed to be about her travels I would have liked to no more about the places she visited, or at least have more pictures of these. Despite being a country known for its culinary endeavours, France -- like other mainland European countries -- prefers long-life UHT milk to fresh. Another questionable choice was the fact that Knisley did not add a few finished pieces to the book. Through delightful drawings, photographs, and musings, twenty-three-year-old Lucy Knisley documents a six-week trip she and her mother took to Paris when each was facing a milestone birthday.

French Milk was created when she was still figuring out who she was as an artist, and the work is much less sure of itself in comparison to her later illustrations. French Milk was a very amazing achievement for a young artist like Knisley, but it is by far the weakest of all her published works that I have read. Some people use mimolette as a substitute because of its orange color although it doesn’t taste like cheddar.

French Milk, from Touchstone Publishing, is a drawn journal about living (and eating) in Paris with her mother.
